One of the newest Christmas rite in Norway is the Lucia tradition. The kids calls it Lussi. It came to Norway approximately 50 years ago. Lucia day the 13. December is a catholic tradition. Lucia was a roman virgin who was killed on Sicily in year 303.
Lucia was killed by her fiancée because she had convinced her mother to give the dowry to the poor people. The history tells that she dyed with a candle in her hand and that she did not regret her act. Lucia is latin and means the light.
”Lussi”-tradition in Norway doesn't have anything to do with the roman virgin. Confused now!? People believed the Lussi-night was the longest in the year. They believed Lussi on ”the night to Lucia day was out checking if people was ready for Christmas. Lussi was a ”vette” (a troll).
